Roots To Branches

This site is for pedigree buffs and new beginners. Our purpose is to examine and consider ancestories in new ways. We will not focus on any particular breed, but the information here is good for all species.

The "Recipe" to create an animal is contained within its genetic code. The genes have two parts at each point (alleles). They are described as being dominant or recessive. When dominant genes are paired together, or with a recessive, the dominant trait is always displayed in the offspring. Recessives must occur in a pair to be expressed, however if the parent has a recessive paired with a dominant gene, the recessive can still be given to the offspring. Genes that control various traits are not always carried in the same way- for instance a variation of a seperate gene causes red hair to occur in humans. Or a fading factor in Malamutes to produce the lighter shades of black and greys.

Carefully consider not only your chosen sire and dam, but their siblings as well, you get not only the genes that you can SEE in your chosen mates, but the hidden genes as well, which you may see displayed in the siblings and relatives.
