****What is a Morgan Pony?? ****

With the influx of breeders striving for larger Morgans for events such as dressage, park, and eventing, the NMPR was formed in 1996 to provide support and registry duties for Morgans, Part-Morgans and grade ponies of Morgan type.
Like its progenitor breed, which ranged in size from 13 to 15 hands, the Morgan Pony is stout, hardy and good natured. Blessed with a loving temperment, Morgan Ponies are ideal mounts and companions for children and smaller adults.
A 14 hand Morganis fully capable of carrying an average sized adult; even for eventing or an
endurance (offsite link) competition; while smaller (offsite link) Morgan Ponies make an ideal choice for hobby driving (offsite link).

****Why a Morgan Pony?? ****

If you are a horse lover who: is smaller, older or has young children, the Morgan Pony makes a super choice. Smaller and easier to train and handle, Morgan Ponies are more docile and will be less likely to challenge you than a larger horse.
A naturally thrifty breed, Morgan Ponies are hardy in most climates and more economical to feed than a 16 hand horse. Feed, fencing, housing and tack expenses will all be lower. That also means a smaller maure pile to compost and return to nature!
Endowed with the same winning personality as the foundation Morgan breed, even partbred Morgan Ponies are trustworthy, loving companions and friends.

**** How much will a Morgan Pony Cost??? ****

Pony Morgans of fancy show lines will often be priced nearly the same as their horse sized counterparts, but in general pony-sized purebred Morgans will be priced in the lower scale of Morgan prices. This can range from a several hundred dollars to a couple thousand. By constrast partblood will usually be found for a little less.
The price of any horse varies with pedigree, training and size. The smallest crossbred ponies of Morgan type will command a slightly higher price due to availability. Considering the lovely Miniature horse of Arab type, a Morgan Type Mini under 10 hands (40 inches) would be an achievement!

PUREBRED MORGAN PONIES:
Pony-sized Morgans are available at almost any breeder of pure Morgans, since most any family line will produce smaller members as well. This should present you with many choices for your new Morgan Pony.
Some family lines often produce ponies more than others. These include the "Lippitts" (offsite link) (descendants of selected sons of "Justin Morgan") , "Lamberts" (descendants of the "Justin Morgan" son "Sherman") and other "Old-type" family lines. The advantage of these families is their purity and conformance to the original type and characteristics. For more information on Morgan Family lines try Sport Morgan Breeders.
CROSSBRED MORGAN PONIES:
Crosses with other breeds is another way Morgan Ponies can be found. The type and uses of the offspring of various crosses will differ, but some breeds to consider crossing onto Morgan Mares are:
Shetland -(offsite link #1)
Classic - considered for mid sized ponies... a 14.2 hh Morgan x 45" shetland; matures to about 13 hands.
Modern- choice for more animated movement and temperment (due to the Modern's influx of Hackney Pony blood)... a driving Pony?
Welsh Mountain Pony - Nice, typey, pony cross for mid-sized Morgan Pony.
Welsh Cob - produces a more robust pony; good choice for Driving

Miniature Horse(1)- (2) (offsite links) good choice for smaller Morgan Ponies... a 14.2hh Morgan x 36" mini, born about 32"; matures to a little under 12 hands.
Falabella (offsite link)- another great choice for smaller Morgan Pony or Mini Morgan.
Barb - more spirited, animated large pony.
Highland Pony -(offsite link) typey, good natured large pony.
Quarter Ponies - QHs originally an offshoot of Morgans. Robust, large pony offspring.
Haflinger Pony - (offsite link) stocky, large, pony Morgans.
New Forest Pony - (offsite link) Typey mid to large Morgan Pony.
POA - yields colorful versions of the traditional favorite.
Icelandic Pony- (offsite link) adds gaited characteristics, hardy temperment.
Spanish Gaited ponies - smooth gaited desert bloodlines.
Arabian - (offsite link) Spirited, typey large pony Morgans. Morabs are a common sight, and very popular.
Newfoundland Ponies & Candian Horse -back to the theoretical Dutch/Canadian foundation of the Morgan.
Caspian Horse - refined large-sized Morgan ponies.
Connemara Pony - (offsite link) Common cross for hunter ponies.
Dales Pony - typey ponies with nice action, Driving prospect??

Potential Morgan Pony owners may buy or lease a nice quality, well bred Morgan mare (preferably near pony-sized herself) and find a locally available stud of one of the above types; keeping in mind the expected end use.
Others who prefer to raise purebreds, will spend a longer time searching out smaller lined Morgans for base stock. If you choose to breed you Pony mare with a Morgan Stud, try to choose one of smaller foundation lies to prevent complications from arising at foaling time. However, MOST pony mares can breed to a stallion about 6" taller without adverse effects.
